MBC 금토드라마 '연인'(극본 황진영/연출 김성용 이한준 천수진)이 종영까지 단 2회 만을 남겨두고 있다. 가혹한 역사의 소용돌이 속에서 남녀 주인공 이장현(남궁민 분)과 유길채(안은진 분)가 애절한 사랑을 지켜낼 수 있을지, 이장현이 임금인 인조(김종태 분)도 외면한 조선인 포로들을 무사히 구해낼 수 있을지 주목된다.
앞서 이장현은 청나라 공주 각화(이청아 분)에게 조선인 포로들을 무사히 돌려보내주면, 자신이 각화 곁에 머물겠다고 약속했다. 이장현을 사랑하는 각화는, 이장현을 얻기 위해 조선인 포로들을 돌려보냈다. 그러나 조선 내부 상황은 이장현, 각화의 예상과는 많이 달랐다. 인조의 폭주로 소현세자(김무준 분)는 사망했고 이장현이 데려온 조선인 포로들은 졸지에 역도 무리라는 누명을 썼다.
이장현은 포로들을 무사히 조선에 들여보낸 후, 직접 각화를 찾아갈 계획이었다. 스스로 각화와의 약속을 마무리 지으려 한 것이다. 그런데 순식간에 역도의 수괴라는 누명을 쓰면서 죽음 위기에 처했고 기억까지 잃었다. 이로 인해 각화와의 약속 마무리도 짓지 못한 상황이다. 이에 지난 19회에서 직접 조선에 온 각화는 "이장현, 널 데리러 왔어"라고 말해 궁금증을 유발했다.
이런 가운데 17일 '연인' 제작진이 20회 본방송을 앞두고 오랜만에 마주한 이장현과 각화의 모습을 공개했다. 사진 속 이장현은 어둠이 내린 밤, 갈대가 가득한 곳에서 의미심장한 표정을 짓고 있다. 그런 이장현 앞에는, 안타깝고도 애처로운 눈빛으로 이장현을 바라보는 각화가 있다. 복잡한 감정이 뒤엉킨 각화의 눈빛, 각화에게 좀처럼 시선을 주지 않는 이장현의 모습이 대비된다.
각화는 청나라 공주이다. 조선의 조정을 압박할 수 있는 권력을 가지고 있다. 이장현이 현재 인조의 폭주 속에서 절체절명의 위기에 처해 있는 만큼, 각화의 존재는 이장현에게 기회가 될 수도 있다. 하지만 각화는 자신이 갖지 못할 바에는 차라리 죽여버리겠다며 이장현을 향한 강렬한 소유욕과 질투심을 보여왔다. 각화가 위기 속 이장현을 구할 것인지, 아니면 더 강력한 위기로 몰아넣을지 '연인' 20회에 귀추가 주목된다.
