이날 방송은 모두를 충격 속에 빠뜨렸던 GOP 총기 난사 사건이 벌어진 이후 편일병(김요한 분)의 범행 동기를 감추기 위한 조직적 은폐 과정이 흥미진진하게 그려지며 단숨에 빠져들게 만들었다. 노화영(오연수 분)은 편일병이 마음의 편지를 이용해 가혹행위에 대한 제보를 했다는 사실을 보고받았다. 하지만 노화영은 사건이 발생하기 전 그 어떤 징후도 없었던 것으로 입막음을 하며 사건을 무마시키려고 했다.
반면, 도배만과 차우인은 편일병이 총을 든 이유에 가혹행위가 원인으로 있을 것을 짐작했다. 법정으로 가기 전 진실을 정확하게 판단하는 것 또한 의무라 생각하는 두 사람의 모습에서는 군검사로서 한층 성장한 모습을 엿볼 수 있었다. 정확한 진실을 알아내기 위해 생존 병사들이 입원해 있는 병원을 찾은 두 사람. 그곳에서 극한의 공포와 불안에 떠는 노태남(김우석 분)의 상태를 확인한 도배만은 완전히 달라진 그의 모습에 착잡함을 느꼈다.
그리고 그 곳에서 마주친 용문구(김영민 분)의 등장에 의구심을 갖게 되면서 긴장감을 배가시켰다. 도배만은 노태남에게 접근하는 이유를 알아내기 위해 그의 의중을 떠봤지만 이에 쉽게 넘어갈 용문구가 아니었다. 그러면서 총기 사건과는 별개로 엑스파일을 손에 넣기 위한 이들의 두뇌싸움이 본격적으로 시작되었음을 알렸다.
이와 함께 가혹행위에 대한 진실을 덮으려는 움직임도 함께 일어났다. 노태남을 비롯해 마병장(장영현 분), 그리고 다른 생존 병사들 모두 가혹행위가 없었다고 똑같은 답변으로 일관한 것. 이는 노화영이 짠 설계라는 것이 밝혀지면서 몰입도는 고조되었다. 노화영은 자신의 아들 노태남에게도 전역과 IM 디펜스 회장 자리를 되찾아주겠다는 것을 미끼로 진실 은폐를 종용하며 명불허전의 악역 분위기를 드러냈다.
그런 노태남은 용문구에게 또 다른 위기로 다가왔다. 그가 PTSD로 의병 제대를 하게 되면 IM 디펜스 회장 자리를 다시 빼앗기는 상황이 닥칠 수도 있기 때문. 여기에 이재식(남경읍 분)은 사건 소식을 접한 후 노화영을 압박하기 시작했다. 사건에 대한 책임을 지고 보직해임 처분 받고 후방에 가 있으라는 이재식의 명령에 노화영은 사단장 자리를 절대 내놓을 수 없다며 그의 약점이 녹음된 음성 파일을 들려준 것에 이어 "모든 전쟁은 피로써 이기는 거다. 이제부턴 내가 명령합니다"라며 발톱을 드러냈다.
이재식은 용문구와 강하준 회사와 신무기사업 업무 협약을 체결하며 노화영을 끝장내 버리기 위한 맞수를 펼쳤다. 이는 노화영과 이재식, 애국회최강자의 자리를 놓고 대립각을 이룬 두 빌런의 전쟁이 시작되었다는 것을 의미했다. 애국회의 내분이 시작된 것을 깨닫게 된 도배만과 차우인은 가장 입지가 약해진 허강인(정인기 분)을 미끼로 활용하겠다는 계획을 세웠고, 과연 그 미끼가 이들의 복수 계획에 어떤 역할을 하게 될 것인지 궁금증을 높였다.
한편 가혹행위 여부를 확인하기 위해 편일병을 조사하기 시작한 도배만과 차우인. 자신의 죄를 인정할 뿐, 범행 동기에 대해 좀처럼 입을 열지 않던 편일병은 어머니를 평생 무자비한 살인범의 엄마로 살게 하겠냐는 차우인의 진심 어린 말에 마음을 바꿨고 가혹행위가 있었다는 것을 인정했다. 하루하루가 지옥 같았고 다음 날이 또 온다는 것이 무서웠다며 울먹이며 자백하는 편일병, 가혹행위 가해자지만 총기 사건의 피해자가 되어 위로금이 나온다는 소식에 좋아하는 마병장, 그리고 그 모습을 지켜보며 괴로움에 눈물 흘리는 노태남까지, 사건을 대하는 당사자들의 서로 다른 온도 차는 씁쓸함을 남겼다.
그렇게 시작된 4사단 GOP 총기난사 사건 공판. 도배만은 편일병이 끔찍한 범죄를 저질렀지만 가혹행위가 범죄 동기라는 주장에 대한 사실 확인이 필요하다며 생존 병사들을 증인으로 신청했다. 마병장을 비롯한 생존 병사들이 거짓 증언을 이어간 가운데 노태남은 힘들었던 군 생활에서 유일하게 자신을 챙겨줬던 편일병을 떠올리며 괴로워했다. 결국 노태남은 가혹행위가 있었다는 사실을 밝히며 "총 쏜 편일병도, 총 쏘게 만든 너희도 다 벌 받아야 돼"라며 울부짖었고, 이어 특별석에 앉은 노화영을 향해 "어머니는 그 군복을 지키기 위해 저에게 위증을 강요했습니다, 이게 어머니가 만들고 싶은 군대입니까?"라고 모든 사실을 낱낱이 밝혔다.
끝내 용서 받지 못할 죄를 저지른 편일병에게는 사형이 선고되었고, 노태남의 솔직한 증언으로 인해 가혹행위에 가담한 병사들에게는 수갑이 채워졌다. 이와 함께 재판 도중 제기된 노화영 사단장에게는 위증교사 혐의와 함께 거대 군 비리 게이트에 대한 본격적인 수사가 시작되면서 그 어느 때보다 묵직한 울림을 전하는 엔딩을 맞았다.
